In a rural town in Argentina, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the man but merely succeed in spreading the chaos. Six years ago, filmmaker Demian Rugna entered the international horror scene with his fantastic and scary flick, Terrified. It set him on the radar of horror fans around the world and then kept us waiting six long years (yes, yes, there were the boom boom times in the middle there…) for this equally thrilling, scary, and at the time of writing this, award-winning follow-up. Rugna uses possession like a contagious pathogen (see the boom boom times), one so easy to catch that no one – or thing – is safe. He capitalizes on that knowledge of our anxieties and dread, often forecasting what he is going to do next. And as much as they forecast what is coming up in equal measure they also shock and surprise. It is the best of both anticipation and surprise, one gnarly kill at a time.

Winner of the best feature film award in Official In Competition Selection at Sitges in Spain you can prepare yourselves for one of the best horror films of the year, nay, the decade, but as we said earlier, no one is safe. Even our audience.

“A masterful work of horror that tackles the possession genre from a fresh perspective. Not for the faint of heart. It leaves you with images of horror that will remain forever embedded in your psyche.” Joe Friar Fort Worth Report

“But, much like 2021’s The Sadness, it’s When Evil Lurks’s shocking violence and willingness to inflict it on, as well as inflicted by those that frequently are immune from it that will catch viewer’s attention more than its social commentary. Little children, family pets, cute farm animals, and pregnant women all figure into the bloodshed once the evil is unleashed.” Jim Morazzini Voices From The Balcony

“If Terrified was a film that built tremendous suspense, When Evil Lurks uses gore and shock to force the audience into submission.” Justine Smith Cult MTL
