Jesus and Maria are going through a rough patch in their marriage.

They have just become parents. They decide that buying a new coffee table will help give their lives some normalcy. It is a decision that will change their lives, more than they would ever expect. What can you say about Caye Casas’s black comedy-drama horror? Not a whole lot, as it would ruin the shock and surprise that awaits you. The less you know, for better or worse, the more you will get out of this experience, of watching The Coffee Table.

A student of Álex de la Iglesia School of Filmmaking (not a real thing), Casas has employed the same level of outrageousness and absurdism that Iglesia has become known for around the world. It was already evident in their 2017 debut feature film, Killing God. It is something that they have continued with aplomb. The Coffee Table is a black comedy horror film at its finest. We’re talking vantablack comedy. You can admonish yourselves for laughing while watching it after you’ve left the theater.

“An exercise in dread and empathy being simultaneously milked for all they’re worth.” Dan Scully ScullyVision

“Casas ensures that every excruciating second of The Coffee Table is a queasy pact the audience makes with the film.” Nadine Whitney The Curb

“It is an unforgettable movie that is definitely not for everyone and will make many people super angry, but it is not a movie you will forget anytime soon.” Rafael Motamayor Slashfilm
