Manufacturing just fifty grams of meth in China will earn you a death sentence, and Timmy Choi (Louis Koo) has manufactured tons of it. After a violent lab accident, he’s in the custody of Captain Zhang (Sun Honglei), and now he has only one chance to avoid execution: turn informant and help Zhang’s undercover team take down the powerful cartel he’s been cooking for. But as the uneasy allies are forced to compress months of police work into just 72 sleepless hours, the increasingly desperate police are quickly stretched past their limits. As things spin wildly out of control, the line between duty and recklessness is blurred, and it becomes unclear whether the cop or the criminal truly has the upper hand.

“Drug War is a deeply intelligent, exhilarating and eminently satisfying adult crime story, one of the best thrillers you’re likely to see this year.” – Philadelphia Inquirer

“Cars go crunch, bullets fly, blood spurts, bodies splatter and an unbelievable amount of cocaine is snorted. The climactic shootout, which goes on for 15 minutes and has an astronomical body count, is a masterpiece of its kind.” – New York Post

“Breaking Bad fans, foreign film cineastes and gangster flick aficionados should all find something worthwhile in Johnnie To’s taut, impeccably staged film, an involving, atmospheric cops-and-criminals import.” – Shock Ya

Programmer’s Opinion

Johnnie To is as close to an action auteur as we have got in this world. While other directors in the world of action cinema are content to make their action scenes loud, flashy and mostly indecipherable, To brings a sense of poetry to his films. He brings a distinct style and flair to his action scenes that is unmistakable. He truly stands out from the crowd.

Johnnie To is still at the top of his game in Drug War and for the first time in his career he brings his ballistic ballet act to Mainland China. Visually there is already a noticeable difference in the landscape and tones on the environment. It is a harsher backdrop than we are used to with his films. This is wholly appropriate to set the stage for a police force looking to crack a major drug trafficking ring. A harsh environment invites harsh tactics. It is also his slowest burning action thriller to date. Prepare yourselves as Drug War crescendos into its violent finale! – Andrew Mack
